A contractor like Downer is a great place to start in the Power industry because you gain an appreciation of what goes into maintaining and upgrading the power network as well as practical considerations that are required in the design phase.

I started with Downer in the graduate programme in February 2022. I have enjoyed my first rotation at Mount Maunganui with the Energy team, doing some Design and Estimation. On a typical day, I start by reading/replying to emails and planning what I will achieve that day. For the bulk of the day I spend one of two ways; out on-site getting an idea of the scope of a project and running through possible solutions or in the office working on various designs and estimations. Throughout the day I usually have a few meetings either to review a design I have put forward with the field supervisors or with one of the young professional groups I am a part of.

Advice:

Enjoy where you are and don’t be afraid to put your hand up for things. As an intern, you will hear about other interns’ amazing experiences, remember your experience is also amazing! Seek out what makes your internship special and what you can learn where you are placed. This will maximise your enjoyment of the programme and what interests you.
