Lara Collier

Software Engineer at Rocket Lab New Zealand

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at University of Auckland

7.00 AM

A quick scroll through my news feeds in bed before I’m up and out the door to my local gym. Working out in the morning means I miss the heavy traffic on my way to work and I get to start my day with an accomplishment. Let’s get the endorphins flowing.

9.00 AM

After listening to a philosophy podcast on my way to work, I rock up to the office about half an hour before my daily meeting of the day. Rocket Lab are flexible with the hours we do, so a late start late finish suits me well. I log in, check all my Teams messages, emails, and make a mental note of anything that needs to be prioritised for the day. We have our team stand-up, where we discuss what we’re working on and what our plan of attack is for certain tasks.

10.00 AM

It’s time for a team ritual – coffee! We make our way down to the kitchen to grind our own coffee and froth our own milk. Many jokes are exchanged about who made the prettiest coffee – the competitiveness is off the charts. I bring my coffee back to my desk and get stuck in for the day. A lot of the time spent in our software team is supporting engineers to get insight from their data, so I’m happy to be the friendly face people reach out to for help!

12.00 PM

Lunch! One thing I really love about being in the office is having our catered lunch every day and catching up with colleagues from across the business about what they’re working on. At Rocket Lab, talking about work during lunchtime is a blessing, because we work on rockets! I love hearing about the different parts of the business and how we all come together to launch a state-of-the-art vehicle to space.

1.00 PM

I get back to my desk and put my desert next to me for later – I need that 3pm pick-me-up. Straight back into the swing of things, I use the afternoons to switch my brain into focus mode. Having spent my mornings on smaller, detailed tasks helping other engineers, I like to step back with a bigger, more impactful project on my mind. Whether that be helping to design a data pipeline architecture that serves the whole company, developing applications to draw insight from data, or brainstorming how to tell interactive stories with data, we’ve got our work cut out for us!

2.00 PM

In the afternoons I will usually have a meeting or two with stakeholders to discuss how they’re using their data and how we might be able to help. I thoroughly enjoy working with other teams here as everyone is incredibly switched on and driven to deliver the best results. As a junior engineer, I get to learn from the best.

3.00 PM

Back to my desk, headphones on, it’s code time. You’ll probably catch me listening to some melodic techno as I get into the “code zone” – uninterrupted time to really focus on a task and drive it to completion. I will definitely nibble on that dessert I set aside for myself earlier – a gift from me to me!

7.00 PM

Having spent the part of the day where I’m most productive smashing out my work for the day, I head home! Some days I’ll leave a little earlier to go hang out with my colleagues at the local food market, but usually by this time I’m in the car listening to some music.

8.00 PM

I get home and I am immediately greeted by my hungry (and adorable) cat. I feed her, water my plants, have a shower, and make some dinner! I have a food delivery service which means I’m never stuck for ideas on what to cook, which is perfect for someone like me.

9.00 PM onwards

I tuck myself into the couch, light a candle, and watch some Netflix. I’ve been watching For All Mankind and Cheer recently (very different genres, I know. But highly recommend both!). Once I can’t keep my eyes open I drag myself to bed, ready to go back to my dream job tomorrow!
