EY teams were extremely supportive, guiding me on tasks from the ground up. In the span of three months, I was exposed to a variety of EY clients. This gave me a great understanding of what a career at EY entails.

Hi, I’m Victor, an Assurance Associate based in Wellington. After attending the Career Compass Programme in my first year of university, I joined EY in November 2017 as a summer intern, and then returned in March 2019 as a graduate in Assurance.

At university, I studied a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting with an Information Systems minor. Almost any business, whether it’s a local convenience store or a multinational corporation, requires some form of accounting skills. This inspired me to study accounting as I knew it would present opportunities across many different industries. At the same time, I knew it was important to be in touch with the way technology is impacting business and accounting, which is why I also studied an Information Systems minor.

I chose to start my career at EY because:

  • the people at EY are relatable, supportive and accepting,
  • there is a strong sense of purpose behind the work - it positively contributes to society and the EY purpose of building a better working world,
  • EY presents the opportunity to grow and develop skills that are internationally recognisable.

From day one of my internships, I was treated as a valued member of the team, performing meaningful work and interacting face to face with EY clients. EY teams were extremely supportive, guiding me on tasks from the ground up. In the span of three months, I was exposed to a variety of EY clients. This gave me a great understanding of what a career at EY entails.

My current role at EY is working on financial statement audits. My day typically begins by commuting to one of the EY client’s offices - this is usually a walk, but sometimes it’s a drive or even a flight! We then usually start with a team coffee to catch up with where we’re all at.  During the day I’ll often meet with various EY client contacts to gain a better understanding of their business, and document findings accordingly.

The culture at EY is flexible, supportive and social. EY seniors and managers are willing to answer any question you have. No matter how busy we may be, we work strongly as a team, and are always looking for an excuse to have a good laugh! Flexibility is encouraged with the ability to work from home, work flexible hours or exercise during the day. Our calendar is filled with social events with a firmwide social function occurring at least once each month.

A highlight of mine has been working on an engagement for a large public sector organisation. This was one of my first engagements as a graduate, and I was entrusted to meet with high ranked officials to better understand their processes. These processes affect thousands of New Zealanders every day, which gave me a strong sense of purpose behind my work.

Why should you apply for the EY Intern Programme? The Programme puts your degree into context, showing you how it can be utilised to add value in the working world. It gave me the boost I needed to complete my final year of study. The Programme is also a great opportunity to determine if a future career at EY is right for you, as it provides a significant insight into the work we do.

Wherever you go after university, be prepared to do something that stretches your train of thought and encourages you to do things you never thought you’d be able to do. Embrace it! The more we’re challenged, the more we grow. The EY Intern and Graduate programmes do just that.
