Our Beca Buildings Team

Across our global footprint, there are endless opportunities for building engineers - in terms of where you live, the projects you work on, and the opportunities and support you have to progress your career. Every building we work on is different, and the challenges we face constantly change. But we know the power of working together to create smart solutions. This means being part of a team that shares ideas across geographies and time-zones, to push boundaries and go beyond conventional approaches. We're also dedicated to developing and sharing technical innovation and sustainable practices. Our past is full of 'world firsts' and the highest accolades for implementing sustainable building principles. Today we are focused on surpassing these achievements by continually challenging and overcoming convention and constraints, to transform our world for the better.

My role is typically to run the numbers for different structural engineering projects. Industry is going a bit slow at the moment so work has been drying up generally but the work I am currently doing is exciting.

Pros and cons of working at Beca New Zealand

Pros

  • The level of the work is great, I'm given the opportunity to work on really interesting projects that challenge me.

  • Team is always keen to help out... everyone is pretty chill.

  • Flexibility in working locations and hours is a plus. Wellbeing and volunteer leave is also pretty good.

  • I feel as though promotions are an accurate reflection of the level of work.

  • On a rare occasion I work slightly more... it’s expected I reduce my hours the following week.

Cons

    • My remuneration feels low, however my understanding is that it is in line with other companies for the level of experience I have.

    • Senior staff do not communicate with junior employees, creating a highly hierarchical structure that limits collaboration.

    • Limited training opportunities that are actually valuable. Company prioritises chargeable time.

    • Office is starting to feel a little bit tired especially when compared to some of the new buildings coming up in the city.

    • There are unspoken expectations to work longer hours to be seen as a high achiever.
