Ko mātou tēnei | This is Us

Nau mai haere mai ki Te Pēke o Aotearoa. It's an exciting time to join BNZ as we are committed to being the Bank for New Zealand. We believe in supporting our local communities, focusing on our customers, continually improving the way we do business, and providing great leadership.

Here at BNZ we embrace flexible working, have a strong focus on career development and progression, competitive remuneration packages, and thriving Māori & Pasifika communities waiting to welcome you with open arms.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As an Intern you'll join our technology tīma (team) and spend 12 weeks learning about the technologies they use, projects they're working on and the problems they're trying to solve for our colleagues and customers. You'll be a valued member of the tīma from day one and get the opportunity to ako (learn) from a wide range of tāngata (people), access self-driven learning platforms and put your pūkenga (skills) into practice delivering valuable mahi (work) for your tīma.

With only a small percentage of NZ's Tech workers identifying as Māori or Pasifika, we're committed to helping increase the cultural diversity of both BNZ and Aotearoa's Tech tīma - a key focus of these opportunities.

Alongside the support you'll receive from your leader, you'll also be allocated a mentor from one of our Māori & Pasifika communities to help you settle into working at BNZ.

What type of tīma could I join?

The great thing about BNZ is the variety of tech and tīma that we have, there really is something for everyone.

If you have a technical background, self-taught or through your studies, these options would be great for you:

  • Front-end/ Mobile Development & Testing
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Engineering
  • Back-end Development
  • Cloud Technologies
  • Mainframe (You may not have heard of it, but it's the engine of the bank. It's our payments machine that ensures millions of dollars are processed quickly, securely, and reliably every day.)

If you don't have a technical background but want to put your communication, organisation and love for tech to good use, you may be more interested in these areas:

  • Business Analyst
  • Product Owner

Throughout the interview process we'll talk to you about your current pūkenga, areas of interest and what you'd like to ako from the internship to help match you to the best tīma for you.

Do I have the right pūkenga and experience for BNZ?

Our Interns come from a wide range of backgrounds, and we love the diversity of thought this brings. Whether you're following a traditional University pathway, have completed a technology certificate/ diploma or are a self-taught coder, they're all good with us.

If you are studying, we're open to students at any stage of their studies from first to final year.

What's important to us is that you're a tīma player who has a passion for technology, continuously wants to ako and loves helping tāngata solve problems with technology solutions.

When would this Internship be and where?

November 2024 - Feb 2025. You will be based in either our Auckland or Wellington offices as this is where most of our Technology tīma are based, however you may mahi from home 1-2 days per week as well once you are settled in to your tīma.

What is the tīma culture and environment like?

Although we're a bank, it's certainly not a place that feels very 'corporate'. With pool tables, sleep pods, on-site café, flexible working spaces and not a tie in sight, it's an environment that embraces different cultures and backgrounds, enabling tāngata to be their best self at mahi. It is very much a place where we are driven by our Matapono (values) of Whāia te iti Kahurangi (excellence for our customers), Toa takitini (grow together), Mahia te mahi (own it) and Tika, pono, aroha (be respectful).

What should you include in your application?

  • A cover letter - to help us to get to know you, your motivation for applying for this internship and what areas of technology you're most interested in.
  • A CV - to help us understand any previous mahi experience (if you have any) and/or your study experience and any personal or technical pūkenga you have developed so far.

Just started a new role so not fully across this. Quite admin heavy, I would prefer to be doing more analysis work but I understand this is a stepping stone.
